β€œAs designers we are the ones that are trying to make the people have a good experience with an object and the brand - so it’s important that we understand how IOT is changing that experience.”

Paul Hatch on the importance of designer to understand new connected technologies with the lens of enabling better human experiences.

In this episode I talk with Paul Hatch, CEO of Teams Design USA. We talk about

  • the journey of scaling the design studio (Teams Design) and his learnings of navigating it for over 20 years

  • why it’s important to specialize, become known for a certain skill and topic as a design team

  • how Industrial Design was influenced by UX

  • how ID will change in the future considering topics like AI-driven tools and generative design as well why this will change the role of the designer moving forward

  • the evolution of European and American Design when it comes design aesthetics, product research and Industrial Design

  • why designers bring a different lens to the conversation around a new products compared to business and tech stakeholders (and why it is becoming more important)

  • how connected products, IoT and the process and thinking around these is changing the role of design as well as the importance of having designers involved early in the process

Again, this is a collaboration of IDSA (Industrial Design Society of America) and Designdrives. All episodes of this series were recorded at the 2019 International Design Conference (IDC) in Chicago.
